The best firm mattresses find the perfect blend between outstanding support and comforting softness. When looking for a new mattress, it might be challenging to find that combination. For this reason, we tested and graded popular firm beds.
The Lull Original, which is sold on Amazon, is the firmest mattress we have ever tested. It offers a surprising amount of firmness, excellent edge support, and just the proper amount of sink-in feeling. Although the Lull Original is reasonably priced, those on a tighter budget might want to think about the Tuft & Needle Original, which is our value selection (available at Tuft & Needle). It offers outstanding assistance at a great price. The Saatva Classic Luxury Firm is a good option for those seeking a more conventional bed (available at Saatva). The mattress’ solid surface and edge support impressed us much.

The Lull Original provided good edge support, was firm for a foam mattress, and allowed for cool sleeping (foam mattresses tend not to fare as well when it comes to this metric).
Lab studies showed that the mattress has excellent edge support and is excellent at dissipating heat. It was long beyond halfway when we rolled a heavyweight bag to the edge of the bed before the bed eventually gave way and the bag really toppled off.
The excellent surface sensation of the Lull Original is what our tester appreciates the most. Although it has a small sink-in effect that makes you feel gently cradled, our tester found it to be comfortable enough to sleep on her stomach and side.
We have nothing but praise for this mattress. Also, it is fairly priced; the Tuft & Needle Original, our best budget mattress, is not too far in price from the evergreen sale price.
Pros
- solid sleeping surface
- adequate edge support
- sleeps coolly
Cons
- For some, it could be overly firm

The Saatva Classic premium firm mattress is a treat since it supports the lumbar spine while letting users sleep peacefully on their stomach and side.
We also appreciate that the Classic is offered in three different hardness levels. Although we only tried the premium firm, the Classic is also offered in firm and plush. Regardless of stiffness, the Classic’s springs are the same. The highest layer of foam is where the difference is found. The firm and luxury firm choices employ denser foams, while the plush mattress uses a less dense foam.
The Classic premium firm features excellent edge support and a typical bed-like feel. In our lab tests, the mattress held up to the strain until our heavyweight bag was almost halfway off the bed, at which point gravity seized over. The Classic also doesn’t come in a box, and since it’s never been compressed, off-gassing is not a concern.
Pros
- many degrees of stiffness
- Comfortable
- very good edge support
Cons
- Refunds cost money.

Tuff & Needle For side sleepers in particular, the original mattress provides exactly the right amount of give to cushion pressure spots. Sleepers on their stomachs and on their backs, who are typically more prone to spinal problems, will probably discover that their favourite posture doesn’t cause them any pain.
Compared to many other foam beds, the product’s edges are more supportive. As our tester sat on the corner, they continued to compress, but when she lay down and went close to the edge, she didn’t feel as though she might fall off.
In lab tests, The Tuft & Needle Original did retain some heat, but it wasn’t the biggest offender. Foam mattresses generally have a problem with heat retention.
This bed is amazing in our opinion. This mattress strikes a balance between firmness and just-right surface give; it isn’t too soft to give you the sink-in feeling that other memory foam mattresses do.
Pros
- Affordable
- Comfortable
- Supportive
Cons
- For certain people, it could be too stiff to retain heat.
Awara Luxurious Organic Hybrid Mattress
- Hybrid kind of mattress
- Wool cover, cotton, latex foam, and coil support core make up the mattress.
- A medium-firm firmness
- Trial duration is 365 nights.
- Assurance: Lifetime Assurance
: California, Full, Queen, King, Twin, Twin XL, and King - More support is provided by the Awara Organic Luxury Hybrid Mattress, which has an
innerspring mattress-like sensation. It also has a lovely bounce from its coils. Overall, it has a more traditional mattress-like feel than a mattress that is delivered in a box.
When the Awara was opened, there was no smell and it felt quite durable. It’s a wonderful option for light sleepers who are frequently awakened by the movements of a spouse or pet because of its dense inside, which seems to absorb motion nicely. The stronger ledge at the edge provided excellent edge support and prevented collapse. Our laboratory experiments showed that it also doesn’t retain much heat.
In addition, Awara works hard to maintain its organic and health-conscious practises, as seen by the fact that it has earned several certifications, including the Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX and UL GREENGUARD Gold.
The Awara did have certain drawbacks. Because of how hefty it is, getting this mattress out of the box and onto a bed frame was challenging.
Pros
- Supportive
- adequate edge support
- No stench of off-gassing
Cons
- hefty and hard to unbox
- For some, it could be overly firm
Mattress Purple
- Kind of mattress: memory foam
- Knit cover, gel grid, soft and firm foam layers, mattress material
- A medium-firm firmness
- Trial duration: 100 nites
Sizes: Split King, California King, Full, Queen, King, Twin, Twin XL, and Full - A surprisingly firm, cushioned, supportive, and bouncing surface characterises the Purple mattress.
The way this mattress dispersed heat particularly pleased us. Moreover, the edge support was adequate. The heavyweight bag tilted towards the mattress edge during our lab test, but it was sustained even after it hung over the edge by a few inches.
It’s important to note that moving the bed is challenging. The price is the main drawback in our opinion, but if it fits within your budget, the Purple is worth a careful look.
Pros
- Firm Rests cool Motion transfer is little
Cons
- Unable to move
